Kaleidoscope Editions

with Trent Walter from Negative Press

Kaleidoscope Editions is a print publishing initiative, founded by directors Kelly Gellatley, Kirsty Grant and Bronwyn Johnson, that provides artists the opportunity to create new work within a supportive and equitable business model. Driven by a shared passion for works on paper and motivated by a love of great art, Kaleidoscope support Australian artists to release a limited edition of original prints to reach and engage new audiences. Bringing together some of Australia’s most exciting artists with the country’s most skilful master-printers, the editions are the result of the creative possibilities and research that come from this pairing of artistic and technical knowledge.
The invitation to participate in Kaleidoscope Editions, through the production of newly commissioned work was transformative for my practice, opening up new technical and material pathways. The process allowed me to test how my established painting practice can be stretched and reimagined in a dynamic collaborative print studio context.

Starting as a photograph taken during a spatial practice workshop at La Trobe University of visual arts student Saskia van Pagee Anderson, the print was developed through an iterative process moving from photography to screenprinting via monoprinting with oil paint. The result is an image which embraces the graphic spirit of screenprinting whilst also pulling through the brushy gestural marks highlighted in the monoprinting process.
